SXSW 2008 - We Get It

All week long I've been anxiously on the lookout for the magic moment when the SXSW Music and Media Conference posts its list of artist bios and mp3s for this year's festival, which runs in Austin, Texas, from March 11-16. I've just spent seven hours poring over the list and compiled my own list of the 286 artists I liked best. Some of them don't really fit here, but I've got a hunch you're going to like quite a few. Last year I did a series of posts, beginning with the longish Big Bloc 4, most of which you can still hear by clicking here and here. This year I'm trying something different, posting 10 or so at a time. Hopefully this will be more manageable for you and will also let me attach labels to all the artists, in case visitors want to check them out in the future. Anyway, here's the first post, with others soon to follow. Clicking the artist names will take you to their SXSW page, which also has links to more information about them. I imagine everybody and his blog is linking to these SXSW pages right about now, and I've noticed that the songs are sometimes slow to load. Patience is advised.

Mixed Baggery: Flowers Forever, Evaporators, Castenada, Dog Day, Dog Age, Days, Honeydrips, Candy

Happy Days.
We tip the bag and let the mix spill out, rocking, barking, dripping, going soft, psyching it to ya, nipping off to Scandinavia, etc. If we don't match your mood/desire, it's not for lack of caring or trying.

Flowers ForeverWet Diamonds mp3 – Click on bandname for more songs.
The EvaporatorsYou Got Me Into This, Now You Get Me Out! mp3
Dog Day – from Night Group
Lydia mp3
Yeh, that's right, a theme. Woof.
Dog Age – from Reefy Seadragon - more Oslovian expertise
The American Life mp3 – Perhaps not quite "focused" enough for earlyweek, but we trust our visitors.

DaysSimple Thing mp3 – from the eagerly anticipated Shelflife EP, Downhill - This glorious group is one of my favorite discoveries of the past 18 months, and of course I owe intros to Morten at Hits in the Car.
Candy Drips Like Honey mp3 – Lo and behold, another theme, as we reach back yet again to the early days of our bloggerprise and reprise a fave from 2006.

Click artist names for info 'n such.

The Breakups

The Breakups are a 15-piece band out of Hollywood composed of five sets of (apparently identical) triplets. It’s pretty obvious these siblings like to maintain continuous communication, and their music is just as tight. I merrily/jealously ushered “you” over to 5 Acts back in July to give a listen to the excellent "After The Fact." Now vocalist/guitarist Jake has graciously sent me an mp3 of the song, which I hope you will enjoy below. You can hear more at their MySpace site. Jake also told me the band will be staging the release show for their new six-song EP, Eat Your Heart Out, at The Echo in Los Angeles this coming Wednesday, 2/13 (or 13.2, should you be winging in from elsewhere). Wouldn't you know this would fall the very day I'd promised the Powerpopulist staff the corporate jet for a ski trip to Vail. Oh, well, the peons can wait a week longer. Oops (blush), almost forgot, I'm a populist. Nevertheless, my treasured colleagues will have to wait and, in the meantime, self-cardiomasticate. See you there, Jake, et. al., and good luck!

Around the Blogosphere: Lotsa Goodos

Today we celebrate the discovery of a couple more excellent blogs new to us, along with highly satisfying finds at some old favorites. Well, in the blogosphere, nothing's that old, but you det my grift. Should the hosterposters' peepers ever pan this way, it is hoped they (the hp's) will appropriate unto themselves our most sincere thanks.

The excellent Setting the Woods on Fire has a lot of C&W (which to these ears is usually marginally interesting), but look what else I found.

Elvis Costello & The Attractions – (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love & Understanding – Setting the Woods on Fire
Pretenders – Brass in Pocket – Setting the Woods on Fire
The Kinks – Waterloo Sunset – Setting the Woods on Fire
Big Star – The Ballad of El Goodo – Setting the Woods on Fire
The Replacements – Can't Hardly Wait (Tim version) – Setting the Woods on Fire

Actually, I'd been to the excellent Timedoor some time ago but must make a point of putting it on the rota. I delight not only in the music at the excellent Infrasons but look forward as well to practicing my (nonexistent) French.

Embrooks – Back in My Mind – Infrasons
Split Enz – Six Months in a Leaky Boat – Timedoor – plus several other versions, including a nice acoustic one by Tim Finn

As always, Peter's up to much good at the excellent Coast is Clear.

New Ghosts – Blue Night & Here Comes the Snakes – Coast Is Clear
Bubblegum Lemonade – Ten Years Younger – Coast Is Clear
Strawberry Whiplash – Who’s In Your Dreams – Coast Is Clear

And Jared's pretty much out of control over at the excellent 5 Acts, by which I mean to say, "Well done, sir."

XTC – Earn Enough For Us – 5 Acts
The Psychedelic Furs – The Ghost In You – 5 Acts
A Sunny Day In Glasgow – The Best Summer Ever – 5 Acts
Dogs Die In Hot Cars – I Love You 'Cause I Have To – 5 Acts

The Raveonettes – Lust – 5 Acts
Nada Surf – Whose Authority – 5 Acts - In case you missed it in an earlier post
Yesan Damen – Whoa! – 5 Acts
Malcolm Middleton – Fight Like The Night – 5 Acts
Sons & Daughters – The Bell – 5 Acts

Honk: Beep Seals, Spectacular Fantastic, Japan Air, Airfields, Superfantastics

Bonkers over Conkers
Sorry not to have posted for a couple of days. Oh, you didn’t notice? Phweww.`````` (simulated flicked sweatdrops) Today, a novel approach: I’m going to post some mp3s I’ve recently found and like. Maybe you will, too. (Post some mp3s, I mean. If so, please let me know.) Now. . .

The Beep SealsStars mp3 – Delighted I was to hear from Jack Beep Seal (aka, "Cooper"), who told me the Manchester band's forthcoming album is to be produced by Norman Blake of Teenage Fanclub. Were we supposed to be impressed or something? Duh, rah-ther. I can't wait to hear what else these Mancunians lay down. (Oh, and after intensive study, I have deduced that Jack is the bloke on the far left in the pic.)

The Spectacular Fantastic – Also invigorating was word from Mike Detmer of these longtime (two whole years for me now) Cincinnatti faves that the band are being delivered of a new double EP. True to TSF tradition, much of it is available free at their website, here and here. I'm posting three of my favorites among the newbies, plus two I previously posted here and here.
Reward
Outer space is nothing but a lie
Honey Money mp3
The Spectacular Fantastic/Tessitura (split single)
You mp3

A theme accidentally takes wing:
Japan AirStars mp3 – Thanks to Morten at Hits in the Car for the headsup on this Stockholm/Kalmar/Malmö outfit. Morten has another downloadable here, and the band’s MySpace has some here.
The AirfieldsNever See You Smile mp3 – I love the way these Torontans (insert appropriate aeronautical witticism). More than that (whatever it might be), I love their music.
The Aimless Never MissOh, If They Could Fly mp3 – These San Franciscans' aimlessness is true, and their music truly satisfying.
The SuperfantasticsRites of Spring mp3 – from Choose Your Destination Now we wax almost brutally subtle. See the connection? I'm sorry, it's late again, and I'm waning wanting. Next time I start at 1:30 A.M. Does an italicized 1 qualify as a Roman numeral? Over and out. Plus, we get the jump on all the bloggers who are waiting till 3/21 (or 21.3, if you prefer) to post this one. Oh, yeah.

Around the Blogosphere: Tesco, Field Mice, Sex Pistols, Byrds, Zombies, Echo, Kaleidoscope, Left Banke, Honeydrips, Devo, Tears Run Rings, Yo La Tengo

Here are some nice numbers I've found while visiting some of my favorite blogs. Don't worry, I've got a batch of nice mp3s to post soon. Have a nice week.

Tesco Chainstore Mascara – Just The Weight You Are & Sun's Shinin’ For You – Indie-MP3 – I share Tom's concern as to the current whatabouts of this terrific band from Staffordshire.
The Field Mice – You’re Kidding Aren’t You? – Badminton Stamps
The Sex Pistols – EMI – Bag of Songs
The Byrds – Mr. Spaceman – Echoes in the Wind

I've got a new blogfriend named. . .Darklands. Darklands doesn't actually know me, but that's okay. Darklands (gender as yet unknown–to me, at least, hence the avoidance of pronouns) has lots of terrific tunes–some newer, some older–to sample in their entirety. I thought it would be fun to post them in a chronological jumble, which is another way of saying I'm about to fall asleep right here at the keyboard and don't want to accidentally publish this post with my eyebrows.

The Zombies – Hung Up On A Dream - Darklands
Echo & the Bunnymen – The Cutter & The Killing Moon – Darklands
Kaleidoscope – Kaleidoscope & Dive Into Yesterday & Please Excuse My Face – Darklands
The Left Banke – She May Call You Up Tonight & Pretty Ballerina – Darklands

The Honeydrips – Try Something New – Darklands
Devo – Gates Of Steel & Girl U Want – Darklands
Tears Run Rings – Sense Of Time & A Question And An Answer – Darklands
Yo La Tengo – Here Comes My Baby & Speeding Motorcycle – Darklands

Not an afterthought: Thanks, favorite bloggers!
